At first glance, the objects look like unusual Christmas decorations or pieces of antique hardware. They have a dark, heavily textured appearance, and many of them feature a small loop at the top, making it possible to hang them.
But their considerable weight suggests they may have served a much more practical purpose.
A woman discovered a large collection of these unusual objects while going through her grandmother’s old home, a house that had been occupied by several generations of the family. Their distinctive appearance immediately raised an interesting question: What were these heavy metal pieces actually used for?
One Possibility: Curtain Weights
One possible explanation is that they were used as curtain or drapery weights.
Weights were sometimes incorporated into curtains or other fabric coverings to help them hang properly. They could provide stability and help maintain an even appearance, particularly with heavier or more formal window treatments.
If the objects are relatively small and numerous, this is one possibility worth considering.
Could They Be Clock Weights?
Another possibility is that some examples could be associated with mechanical clocks.
Traditional weight-driven clocks use suspended weights to provide energy to the clock’s internal mechanism. As the weights gradually descend, that energy is transferred through gears and other components.
Clock weights come in many shapes and sizes, however, so appearance alone would not be enough to confirm this explanation.
Window Sash Weights Are Another Possibility
Older houses also commonly used window sash weight systems.
In these systems, weights were connected to cords and pulleys inside the window frame. The weights helped counterbalance heavy window sashes, making the windows easier to raise and lower.
How Could They Be Identified?
Look for:
- Exact weight and dimensions
- Manufacturer’s marks or numbers
- Engraved symbols or lettering
- The shape and size of the hanging loop
- Evidence of attachment points
- Matching pieces or sets
- The location where they were discovered
Finding many similar objects together can also provide an important clue. A collection of identical weights may indicate that they were once components of the same mechanical system.
